Derek Williams RBSA FRSA -
Derek was born on the 28/02/32 in Dudley West Midlands, and passed away suddenly but peacefully at home in Newtown on the 10/10/09.
About the Artist; -
As a young teenager at the age of 16 years old derek became dangerously ill with TB and was bed ridden for 2 years and it wasn't until some strange never seen before Aunt came along and after her giving healing prayers upon Derek around one week later Derek began to get stronger, the doctors called it a mircle after they believed Derek was on his death bed. It was while Derek lay in his bed in Dudley that he picked up his pens and paints and began the journey to the great artist and teacher of art he became.
Studied in the West Midlands and London.
He worked for many years at the express and star in Wolverhampton as editor and photographer.
His claim to fame also is the little ship he designed on the old spice bottle and the tear drop on the V05 shampoo bottles.
He taught art at the West Midlands college of higher Education Walsall and at the College of Adult Education/Further Education Wolverhampton and ran his own private Art classes around the West Midlands.
He retired with his wife to the much loved family place Borth, from Borth he very successfully ran his own private art classes.
One of his students went on to accomplish a place at Slade school of Art in London having been voted the top student in both her first and second years there.
The beautiful Welsh coastline inspired many of his paintings.
Derek was fascinated by Dylan Thomas and this can be seen by a whole collective of work done by Derek to commemorate Dylan Thomas .
Derek was very memorised by Laugharne as it is such a lovely spot in South Wales that excludes the spirit of Dylan Thomas, ever since. Derek's student days he has always had a desire to express his feelings in paint for Dylan, his work and where he lived.
At lot of his work on Dylan is worked in only a few colours and tones as Derek felt that working in this way that it captured the feeling of sadness and mystery which pervades the area, especially The boathouse and St. Johns Hill,High above the Estuary.
